Comparing Razz, Lucera, and Rival

By: Greg Roberts

Here’s some basic spec comparisons:

Razz – 40″ Tall, 15″ wide, 12″ deep – 90lbs – 97db

Lucera 40″ tall, 18″ wide, 14″ deep – 110lbs – 99db

Rival 41-1/2″ tall, 19″ wide, 16″ deep – 135lbs – 100db

Sensitivity and Power Needed

I get asked a lot about how much power my speakers need. The honest answer is—it depends on how you listen.

With the 97dB Razz, two watts of power can already deliver a surprisingly full and engaging experience. But sensitivity numbers alone don’t tell the whole story. A speaker that maintains that efficiency while delivering real low-frequency output is a very different thing than a small driver system that rolls off early.

The Razz reaches down to 35Hz with authority, so you’re getting a complete, full-range presentation—not just midrange efficiency.

So is two watts enough? It depends:

  • Yes – If you listen at moderate levels and value balance, tone, and musical engagement, the Razz will deliver a full and satisfying experience.
  • Maybe not – If you like to energize the room and feel the full physical impact of music, more power will give you that extra headroom.

The Lucera and Rival, with their higher sensitivity, offer even greater ease with low-powered amplification and more headroom when you want it.

Comparing the Sound

All three Volti models share the same core design philosophy and sonic character: natural tone, dynamic realism, and an effortless, engaging presentation of music.

What changes as you move up the line is not the essence of the sound—but how far it is taken.

The Razz delivers a complete and highly engaging listening experience. It captures the core of what makes a Volti speaker special—tone, presence, and musical involvement—in a straightforward and approachable way.

Moving to the Lucera, you’ll hear an immediate expansion in scale and refinement. The soundstage opens up, bass reaches deeper with greater linearity, and the overall presentation becomes more effortless. There’s a sense of ease and authority that builds on what the Razz already does so well.

With the Rival, refinement reaches its highest level. The addition of the hand-built wooden midrange horn and top-tier components brings greater resolution, texture, and realism. Everything becomes more vivid and lifelike, while still retaining the musicality that defines all Volti speakers.

Each step up brings more scale, more ease, and more refinement—but all three models deliver the full Volti experience.

Which One Fits My Room?

Room size is a common concern, but in practice, all three models work well across a wide range of spaces.

You might expect the larger Rival to require a much bigger room, but that’s not necessarily the case. Proper setup matters more than room size alone, and I’ve heard all three models perform beautifully in both small and large environments.

So Which Model Should You Choose?

All three models are built to deliver a complete and deeply satisfying musical experience.

The decision isn’t about choosing between “good” and “better”—it’s about how far you want to take that experience.

  • The Razz offers a direct, engaging, and complete introduction to the Volti sound
  • The Lucera expands that experience with greater scale and ease
  • The Rival brings the highest level of refinement and realism

Whichever you choose, you’ll be getting a speaker designed to connect you with music in a meaningful way.

And most importantly—

HAVE FUN!
